Google’s Master Plan – The Nexus Tablet

Google have had their secret weapon, their powerhouse, their master plan, boiling away for a while now. Now it’s here and it’s very impressive… it’s the Nexus 7, and it’s big!

Not literally, of course. With 7 inches of powerful, quad-core, high-quality glory, it’s a light, compact, smooth, portable tablet, something that can’t be said for the majority of the Nexus’ tablet forefathers. Now, while the Nexus 7 definitely isn’t quite up to par with Apple technology and can’t quite be described as an ‘iAssassin,’ it’s certainly an attractive device and can be considered an iPad enemy, alongside some other tablets.  The battery life on the tablet is more than decent and should offer enough juice to last. The ability to use Micro-USB on it only serves to make it all the more effective, unlike some other big-brand tablets we could possibly name.

It runs on the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and Android has proven numerous times before that they can make an exceptional OS; the Jelly Bean is no different (although one must ask what obsession Android has with naming OS’ after sweet treats). A slick, smooth and familiar layout, the Jelly Bean is very similar to the Ice Cream Sandwich in some respects, except perhaps it offers a more refined and less craggy experience. Lag is normally the bane of all operating systems, but the problem is practically non-existent on the Nexus. The internet experience is a quick and easy one, although perhaps it’s helpful that the tablet is a Google-branded one.

Of course, there’s the familiar customisable layout that is always associated with an Android OS. With a few taps and swipes it is possible to set up the widgets we all know and love; we can check things like social network updates and the weather without having to open up any apps. For the time-constrained businessman this is beneficial, since it sheds valuable seconds. It isn’t just the convenience and familiarity of the widgets on the home-screen which make them so nice; they’re colourful and attractive. How could one forget Google Play? It’s the store which can be found on most Android devices that allows one to buy films, e-books, and, of course, apps!

All-in-all, the Nexus is a nice new addition to the tablet market which is small and convenient to use for the most part. Although it isn’t enough of a giant to topple the iPad, it’s certainly a competitor because of its speed and familiar attractiveness.
